Matt Reeves to direct Batman, Chris McKay in talks for Nightwing

Double dose of DCEU news today! Not only is Matt Reeves finally confirmed as director for the Batman solo film, a surprise Nightwing solo film is underway with Chris McKay in talks to helm!

After some back-and-forth of who would helm the Batman solo film, Ben Affleck’s top-pick has officially signed on to direct the film. Reeves (Cloverfield, War of the Planet of the Apes) will not only direct but also produce the film. The script was worked on by Affleck himself along with head of the DC Universe Geoff Johns with Argo screenwriter, Chris Terrio, finished with rewrites. If the cast is the same as before, joining Affleck is Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke.

“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child,” Reeves said. “He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.” (Variety)

Other surprising news in the DCE-Batman-U is a Nightwing film is under way. And WB is looking at The Lego Batman Movie director, Chris McKay, to helm the film with Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) writing the script. It certainly seems like McKay is up for it, given his Twitter feed. The question is, then, who will play Dick Grayson? I have a theory that heavily rumored DCEU-cast Armie Hammer could be Dick. He’s in the right age range, he’s got the right physical attributes, and the fact that he has ties to the DCEU only because of Geoff Johns and Joe Manganiello (Johns a co-writer for The Batman, Manganiello is Deathstroke)…But that’s just a theory. Who would you cast?

What do you hope to see in the Batman and Nightwing films? Here’s to hoping Nightwing will show up in Batman first to introduce him before his solo! (And then eventually, hopefully he leads the Titans…)

  1. I personally think they should get, Luke Pasqualino… The former Skin’s star not only looks the part, but he’s displayed the ability to play a hero that resembles the smooth, charismatic, acrobatic, Nightwing in 2013’s dystopia filmSnowpiercer. He did the same in in the short-lived BBC TV series; The Musketeers displaying all the physical qualities that lends itself to Dick as D’Artagnan

  2. I’m frosty with Reeves directing The Batman(the guy knows how to make phenomenal films, just as long as WB don’t interfere for the umpteenth time), but McKay on Nightwing scares me. I mean, I can only think of 3(one pair of co-directors) directors who made the jump from animation to live action successfully:Brad Bird(Incredibles before MI 4), Christopher Miller and Phil Lord(Cloudy with a chance of meatballs before Jump Street), and Andrew Adamson(guy made Shrek before Narnia), all the rest didn’t do to awful well. In fact, Chris McKay don’t seem well prepared to jump to Nightwing(Lego Batman and Robot Chicken are well meaning parodies). Think I’d rather have McKay for Flash. Sorry for the long windedness.
