Each year I share a “Looking Forward” piece featuring top movies I’m excited to see as well as the new characters. I wanted to do something a bit different this year and add another piece – news I hope to hear in 2017. Now I can’t guess everything, I’ll probably forget some things, but here’s to what I want to hear in movie news next year.
In no particular order, let’s begin! Don’t forget to share in the comments what you hope to hear!
First up with Marvel’s Avengers third film, official casting news. We know who plays what characters in the MCU but we don’t know who will officially shape out the roster.
Who all is rumored? The original Avengers, Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Maria Hill; newcomers Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ant-Man; Bucky Barnes; Spider-Man; Doctor Strange and Wong; Captain Marvel; the Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Groot, and Rocket; and the big bad of the MCU, Thanos. Until Marvel has officially released a statement, which I assume will occur close to production time nothing, is confirmed for me. The first part is set for a May 4, 2018 release date.
Ben Affleck’s Batman solo is set to start filming in the spring and everyone is pretty excited for what is to come. Returning to the DCEU with Affleck are Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth and JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, with newcomer Joe Manganiello debuting as Deathstroke. It’s unknown if Jared Leto’s Joker or Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will make an appearance.
What would be great to hear are other casting/character announcements and the plot of the solo film. What we also don’t know is the official release date – it was guessed we could see it take a 2017 date but with the Justice League sequel reportedly pushed back, some have guessed it could take that date. Knowing WB, I would think they would want to bring the Batman movie sooner rather than later…
Next up, the Fantastic Beasts universe. Now that everyone knows Grindelwald is heavily involved in this universe, we can count on seeing a young Dumbledore in future films.
Fans of the series know the history between the two, and I, and I’m sure others agree, look forward to their legendary fight that is said to be the battle of the ages. What I hope to see coming 2017 is official casting news of younger Albus Dumbledore.
Next, stepping into the DCEU, Justice League. The movie is out in November and we only have a few official images and SDCC footage for the film.
I’m hoping to see an official theatrical trailer in the new year, giving a better look to the heroes’ fight as well as, hopefully, the first look at the big bad, Steppenwolf. I’m also hoping they’ll try to keep Superman hidden, as there was no footage in the SDCC footage, until the movie is released. As well as any surprises, say, Darkseid.
Deadpool was a big hit and a sequel has already been green-lit. The film lost its original director, Tim Miller, but recently announced John Wick director David Leitch for the sequel. It’s also been said that casting was being held for Cable and Domino.
What I’d like to see, first off, is a release date for the sequel. Nothing has been confirmed yet, surprisingly, but as long as the new director gets to take his time and make the Deadpool sequel we all deserve, it’ll be worth the wait. What I hope to hear as well are official casting announcements of Cable and Domino – rumors have swirled who is in the running but nothing has been confirmed.
Going back to the DCEU – Aquaman. James Wan starts production early next year in Australia. We have Jason Momoa as our Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, and recently, Aquaman’s half-brother, Orm, being played by Patrick Wilson. However, we don’t have who is said to be the villain of the film, Black Manta.
Already multiple actors have campaigned for the role, but no official casting announcements have come yet. It’s expected the new year will come with a bang with the casting announcement of Black Manta, so hopefully that is true.
Disney has begun bringing favorite classics to life, from Cinderella to Maleficent to Alice in Wonderland and soon, Beauty and the Beast. There are certainly a number more to come in the future, but what ones?
Mulan was announced this year to have a live-action film coming in November 2019. They also have another untitled live-action film set for August the same year. I’d like to hear some casting announcements for Mulan as well as director news in 2017. As for the untitled, hopefully an announcement of what the film exactly is, followed by casting announcements (that is if the film makes the 2017 date).
We recently received news that Margot Robbie’s Suicide Squad spin-off film is Gotham City Sirens, and that David Ayer would return and direct it. What we don’t know is who is in it, and when exactly the film will be released.
It was said Robbie’s spin-off film would feature female superheroes and villains, but never confirmed which ones. We can guess Catwoman and Poison Ivy will be in it, so my hope is to hear casting news in 2017. It’s said the film is being fast-tracked and I wouldn’t be surprised if they started filming next year. What I also want to see is casting announcements outside of Selina and Pamela, maybe like Zatanna or Dick Grayson. Hopefully, we’ll also find out how heavily the film will be based on the GCS run.
Coming out in the fall is the third film of Thor’s adventures. Presumably, the film will have a big tie-in to Avengers Infinity War, and we can only hope this will be the better of the Thor films.
The film has been done filming but we have yet to see a trailer for it. Here’s to hoping that 2017 will feature that trailer and finally give us our first looks at Ragnarok and new characters such as Hela and Valkyrie.
Doug Liman was surprisingly announced to direct Justice League Dark in the fall (which meant Gambit lost another director). No date has been set and no casting has been set but there have been rumors/speculations…
JLD is rumored to feature John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Jason Blood, and Swamp Thing. Casting rumors have stretched from Colin Farrell to Ewan McGregor to Ben Mendelsohn to Eiza Gonzalez. What I’d like to hear in 2017 is a release date for the film and official casting announcements of the team. Now there is a Justice League Dark animation coming out and I’m guessing it’ll be a similar situation to Suicide Squad – put out an animation to test the audience reaction then proceed with a live-action.
Now for some news I hope to hear that are iffy on the probability scale…
We have our Captain Marvel in Brie Larson, the film also has its screenwriters, but we don’t have a director or other cast members. I would assume Captain Marvel will begin filming late 2017, as the release date is currently set for March 2019. What I hope to hear is the director of the film and then some casting announcements.
DC has its own Captain Marvel in Shazam, a film announced way back when with Dwayne Johnson set to play the big bad, Black Adam. The film was scheduled for an April 2019 release date, although most DCEU dates have shown to be tentative. What would be great to hear and a smart move to get people pumped up for the film is the announcement of a director for the film as well as the casting of Shazam himself. Numbers of actors campaigned for the role and it would be great come SDCC ’17 that we finally get the news.
Now I don’t necessarily want a GL Corps film casting announcement, as the film is out 2020 and that type of announcement could be saved for another year. What I do want to hear is the casting of Green Lantern (Hal Jordan). It’s continuously pestered and questioned by fans and I think it is about time to let fans hear what they want – Hal/Green Lantern is coming. If he is being saved for a surprise cameo in Justice League, I want them to keep it that way. If not, go big at SDCC.
